![]() Soon-ho is an attorney who needs to pay his father's debt. The story follows the relationship between a lawyer and an autistic student. The film was released in South Korea on February 13, 2019. I get that the director wanted to paint a pretty picture here, but a pretty picture is neither artistic nor powerful.Innocent Witness ( Korean: 증인 Hanja: 證人 RR: Jeungin) is a 2019 South Korean drama film directed by Lee Han, starring Jung Woo-sung and Kim Hyang-gi. ![]() Even though I love direction, message, and performance of 'Innocent Witness', I have hard time connecting to it because it's too perfect and idealistic to the point of eliminating the sense of reality. By hiding what truly happened till later, the director questions audience as well, 'you did not believe Ji-woo, either, right?' Ji-woo is not the one who needs saving Sun-ho is saved by her. Moreover, she is viewed as a true hero of the story, being persistent with her testimony and sticking to the truth while all others truly believe the accused is innocent. Ji-woo does the best she can do for herself and for the community in her position as a student and disabled. It's not pity, incompetence, or inferiority. The way the movie approaches an autistic student is very delicate. 'Innocent Witness' is beautifully written, and the performance of Jung and Kim as well as minor roles are wonderful. Soon-ho's father alone makes it worth it. If you're still sitting on the fence, watch this movie. There were many moments where you could tell the actor or actress meant so much more than the English translation, also there were instances where because of the basic translation a few of the emotional beats weren't as impactful as I wish they would've been, again not blaming the performances but instead the subtitles and my complete lack of speaking Korean. I did watch the movie with English subtitles and was honestly quite disappointed in the translation. The music was tasteful and yet not too bold, really complimenting whatever was on screen there were a few abrupt cuts of the music but that can be chalked up to the editors' fault, or perhaps, style. This is the first Korean film I've ever watched and it set the bar quite high. As someone who has a few family members on the autism spectrum, I think this film handled the delicate subject tastefully and politely. In the end, it leaves you with much to think about yet real-world advice to help. Yet it gives you so many miny victories throughout, signs of progress and deeper understanding that you never feel so guilty you have to turn the movie off. This is a movie about overcoming prejudice, prejudice you might not even be aware you have. It's the journey you go on with the main character, Soon-ho. But the reason I would implore you to watch this movie isn't the actors, story arcs, music nor cinematography. It utilized the long runtime well with all the main characters being fleshed out nicely and having very fulfilling character arcs! The wrap-up at the end of this movie was one of the nicest I'd seen in quite some time. For a movie that's 2hr and 9mins long, the pacing was quite nice with some areas a little waning but always holding enough action to keep you hooked. This movie is engaging from the get-go, barely giving you enough time to breathe before the inciting accident takes place, starting the whirlwind that is this movie. Now that we've got that out of the way, onto the actual review. A note of finality on this subject, the movie is categorized as "Crime, Drama" and that's exactly what it is. If you came here looking to watch a relationship blossom between an older gentleman and young girl. Personal Rating: 7/10 (worth watching) Looking at the other reviews for this film I feel like I need to address something right off the bat, this is not a romantic movie. But it is without a doubt a recommendable film, in which the suspense and tension is maintained up until the last minute. I will not ruin the suspense by revealing which one prevails in the end. While getting deeper into the case, the lawyer was stuck between professionalism of a lawyer and morality of a human being. What he did not expect is that the clue are to lead him to a direction opposite to his original conviction. For convincing the jury about the truth and getting to the bottom of the mysterious case, the lawyer decided to make acquaintance with the kid and hopefully excavate more clues. Nevertheless, the only witness, a 14-year-old girl with autism offered her testimony that the case was a murder instead of suicide. Judging from his conversation with the maid, he was convicted that she was innocent. ![]() An old man was killed with a plastic bag over his head, the suspect being the maid who has served him for over a decade. A special case came to the desk of a 46-year-old lawyer who was living with his father.
